The BlackGirlsHack (BGH) Cyber Talent Study, in partnership with skillrex, was conducted to better understand the self-assessed skill levels, professional development needs, and career experiences of underrepresented cybersecurity professionals. This report summarizes key findings, trends, and strategic recommendations based on survey data collected from 443 participants.
Study Overview and Methodology
Participants completed a 60-question self-assessment aligned to the NIST-NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework. Responses were organized by experience level (junior, mid, senior), membership and training participation status, and current functional role. The goal was to establish a baseline of confidence across technical, professional, leadership, and organizational competencies.
This report is not just an internal reflection, it’s an invitation. BGH has demonstrated what works. Now, it’s time for funders, employers, and educators to help scale it to close the cybersecurity workforce gap—and do so equitably—through strategic collaboration.
